Meet Gal Gadot, the model Wonder Woman

When Gal Gadot was announced as the actress that would play Wonder Woman’s latest reincarnation, critics were quick to point out her flaws. She wasn’t buxom enough, muscly enough, amazonian enough. She wasn’t Lynda Carter, the personification that comes to mind when we think of the comic book heroine. The critiques have continued, even though the first film she will feature as the character, Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, isn’t released until 2016.

Despite all that, the 30-year-old’s recent appearance at Comic-Con piqued our interest thanks to her chic, sleek, perfectly-preened style. Throw in this month’s announcement that she is the face of Gucci’s new fragrance, Bamboo, and a steamy editorial in style publication Interview, and it got us wanting more: who is Gal Gadot?

She had crowned Miss Israel in 2004, aged 19, before competing for the title of Miss Universe – something she shares with Carter, who had crowned Miss World USA in 1972, three years before she began playing Wonder Woman.

But her modeling career was put on hold when she joined the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) for two years, as the country’s conscription laws require of all residents. She was a physical fitness specialist who taught gymnastics and calisthenics there, putting her in good stead to play a superhero. Her time there led her to appear bikini-clad on the cover of Maxim magazine in 2007, thanks to an article about Israeli models who had served in the IDF.
